Not many homes can be moderate in size, simple and functional in design, yet still be absolutely captivating. But, Rich & Melinda pulled all of that off very nicely in this well-conceived and well-designed 2,350 square foot Timber Frame home with a million dollar view.…their “Heartland Mountain Lodge”.
Project & Client Story
Rich and Melinda Halford have enjoyed different careers in life — but they’ve always been a creative couple. Currently they are both physical therapists and professional musicians. They are also good at collecting friends. Several helped in design and construction, and one — Mark Kirkpatrick, of Mountain Construction Enterprises in Boone, NC — was an old college buddy who also happened to be a timber frame expert.
Mark, a Hearthstone customer, and distributor for many years, teamed up with Hearthstone, the Halfords and their local builder and local friends to design and build this home which is a truly inspiring blend of functional, cozy simplicity — yet with unique, personal, and imaginative details everywhere you look.
The principal feature of the home isn’t the home itself (even though we at Hearthstone are quite proud of the frame and the home). The Halfords found a beautiful 18-acre property containing a river gorge, a thick hardwood, and hemlock forest and an absolutely priceless view. The home was designed to feature the property.
Accordingly, there is a lot of glass, screened in porches, decks, and an open floor plan. Expecting to live there a long time, the Halfords were thinking long-term with the floor plan, which includes wheelchair access, and both the upstairs and downstairs bedrooms are designed to be master suites. The décor inside is eclectic — as so many of our homes are — with everything from Arts & Crafts influence, to French Country, to Tiffany lamps, to a locally-crafted stained glass window in the bathroom.
